Letter : Fort Defiance, Arizona Territory, to William Henry Holmes, 1877 Apr 27.

ALS written by William Henry Jackson while working as a photographer with the Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories. The letter reports his experiences during a trip from Fort Defiance to Moqui [Hopi] pueblos. Jackson describes an annual assembly of Indians at Fort Defiance for distribution of United States government goods; travel with a group of companions including Sheldon Jackson; photography of ruins at Canyon de Chelly and of Hopi pueblos; and acquisition of Indian artifacts. He also briefly discusses development of his photographs and plans for a trip to Chaco Canyon. Accompanying the letter is a TLS and a typed note, both written by Jackson's son, Clarence S. Jackson. The TLS, to "Norma," Feb 7, 1960, briefly describes his father's letter and encloses a typed transcript. The note explains that the letter had been returned by Holmes to William Henry Jackson in 1931.
